Alrighty then! Welcome to the seventh video of Bangkok Unmasked! The YouTube channel that helps you get the most out of your visit to Bangkok city! In this video I’m going to cover getting a haircut – for both men and women – in Bangkok.

Before I begin, this video will be broken down into 5 sections:

Section #1. A brief background on getting a haircut in Bankgkok.
Section #2. My favorite hair salon in Bangkok, Chalachol.
Section #3. How to get to Chalachol, Amarin.
Section #4. What to expect at Chalachol, Amarin and their key services.
and finally Section #5. A couple of other solid options for getting a haircut in Bangkok.

Getting a haircut in Bangkok can be a confusing, difficult and often traumatic experience for both tourists, and expats, who speak little to no Thai.

As with everything in Bangkok, there’s a broad choice of options; from ramshackle backstreet barber shops through to high end salons in the many malls dotted throughout the city. Ultimately, no matter where you go, if your hair-stylist doesn’t speak English that short-back-and-sides, or perm, that you’re looking for has the potential go horribly wrong!

I would strongly advise you not to go for the cheapest option if you want a decent experience. There are plenty of backstreet barber shops that will give you a haircut for as little as THB 40-100. [About USD 1-3]. If you want a simple ‘buzz-cut’ with little to no styling, they’re a potential option. From my experience, most of these guys will give you one option, and that’s the style of haircut that they’re used to giving. If it’s what you want, fine. For most though, it almost certainly won’t be. Also, the barber likely won’t speak any English, so communication will be a nightmare.

I’ve been going to my current hair salon, called Chalachol, for about 5 years now. [As an aside, I’ve been using the same hair stylist, Ms. Pla, for about 6 years now; when her old shop ‘Salon De Bangkok’ – located in ‘The Emporium’ shopping mall – closed down, I moved with her!]

Chalachol has 17 branches through Bangkok, and they’ve been in business since 1988. The company was founded by Dr. Somsak Chalachol. Interestingly, Somsak is the first Hair Designer in the world who finished a Ph.D. thesis on his own practice!

Check out the website Chalachol.com to find the location closest to you. I go to the one in Amarin Plaza, as it’s easily accessible by Skytrain. Here’s how to get there.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here’s some footage from my last trip to visit Ms. Pla.

To make a booking at Chalachol Amarin, call 02-251-1941. For what it’s worth, I strongly recommend Ms. Pla. She can do all the key Chalachol services:

1. A standard haircut. This includes consultation, shampoo, head massage, instant conditioner, cutting and styling.
2. Shampoo and Blow Dry, and styling/or set.
3. Hair Coloring.
4. Hair Straightening.
5. Hair Perming.
6. General Hair Care.

What follows are a couple more options that are easily accessible by either the Skytrain, or underground/MRT. I personally don’t use either of them, but friends of mine do, and they are very happy with them.

1. ‘Toni & Guy’

At this world-renowned brand, you’ll find London-trained stylists who offer cuts starting at around THB 900. They’re located on the 2nd floor of ‘The Esplanade’, a shopping mall which is right next to the ‘Thailand Cultural Centre’ MRT Station. Head for exit # 3. They’re open from 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM. To book an appointment, call 02-660-9212.

2. ‘Truefitt & Hill’

This option is just for men. Like their parent barbershop in London, which is the oldest barbershop in the world, Bangkok’s T&H branches offer a luxury grooming experience for men. Haircuts start at THB 1,400.

There are currently two branches of T&H, both of which are in upscale shopping malls. The first is in ‘Central Embassy’; head for ‘Phloen Chit’ BTS Station, and take exit #5. You can then take a short walk on the Skybridge which connects the BTS station directly to Central Embassy. To book an appointment, call 098-363-6146.

The second T&H branch is in ‘The Emporium’; head for ‘Phrom Phong’ BTS Station, and take exit #2. Like the ‘Central Embassy’ branch you can then take a short walk on the Skybridge which connects the BTS station directly to ‘The Emporium’. To book an appointment, call 061-162-4663.

Anyway…That’s it for this video. Expect a new video shortly. [It should be posted in about a week, or so].

For all you techies out there, this video was shot on a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, and edited using HitFilm Express.
