Welcome to the forty-fifth video of Bangkok Unmasked! The YouTube channel that helps you get the most out of your visit to Bangkok city! If you’re new here, please consider subscribing! In this video I’m going to give you a heads up on a law that you might not be familiar with. But maybe should be. The law is about sex toys in Thailand.
Let’s get started!
You’re about to leave for your holiday to Thailand. It’s checklist time! Toothbrush, swimsuit, sunscreen, vibrator…
But wait! Before you pack that last item, know that sex toys are illegal in Thailand.
Wait, what?!
From my understanding, Thailand isn’t trying to criminalize female and male sexual pleasure. [I would certainly hope not]. The issue is that sex toys fall under Thailand’s list of prohibited goods, specifically ‘obscene objects’.
The Thai law on ‘Obscene objects’
What follows comes directly from the Thai Customs website.
Prohibited Goods are goods for which either the import into or export out of Thailand are prohibited. Any person imports or exports prohibited goods is considered as committing offences and subject to penalties indicated in the relevant national legislation. In addition, such activity is also considered as an offence under Articles 27 and 27 bis of the Customs Act B.E. 2469. It is prohibited by law to bring the following items into or out of Thailand.
- Obscene objects/literature/pictures.
- Pornographic materials.
Note. It’s very much a grey area, but ‘obscene objects’ basically refers to dildos, vibrators, male masturbators AKA ‘flesh lights’ and such like. I’m guessing that a bag of BDSM toys and equipment would also qualify.
Final thoughts on Sex toys in Thailand
Like most countries, a good number of Thailand’s laws make little sense. Many are stunned to learn that prostitution is actually illegal in Thailand. Check out a video that I did on the subject of ‘Is Bangkok prostitution legal?’ through the i-icon above.
With this said, when you arrive in Bangkok you’ll quickly realize that it crazy easy to find paid sex. A sex shop, not so much.
Frankly I very much doubt that you’ll be serving time for bringing personal sex toys to Thailand. However, if customs officials find them in your bag expect them to be confiscated. A fine is also likely. Note. If you have a bag full of sex toys, and customs officials suspect you of importing them for sale, you will definitely have a very tough time.
If you want to avoid the risk of bringing in your own sex toys we’ve been told that you can find plenty for purchase in Patpong market and various stalls on lower Sukhumvit i.e. between Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy. [After dark].
Anyway, that’s it for this video. Expect a new video next week.
For all you techies out there, this video was shot on a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, and edited using HitFilm Express.
